PRCS starts construction of 6,000 CGI shelters for Balochistan quake victims
BRUSSELS: The European Union said Wednesday it was ready to provide humanitarian help to Pakistan following an earthquake in Balochistan that has killed at least 160 people and has left thousands more homeless.

'I was shocked to hear the news about the earthquake which struck south-western Balochistan earlier today,' EU external affairs commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner said.

'The EU stands ready to assist Pakistan with humanitarian assistance if requested,' the commissioner said in a statement.
According to officials in Pakistan, a strong earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale rattled the province of Balochistan during the early hours of the morning, destroying scores of homes.

At the request of third countries, the EU executive provides emergency aid, food and help to refugees and displaced people who fall victim of natural disasters or armed conflict through its humanitarian aid department, known as ECHO.

ECHO's annual grants total more than 700 million euros (900 million dollars).
Turkey sends container homes for quake victims
Turkey has sent 120 ‘container homes’ worth $1 million for people affected by the recent earthquake in Ziarat. Turkish Ambassador Engin Soysal handed over the ‘homes’ to Balochistan Information Minister Mohammad Younas Mulazai in the worst-hit area of Wam on Sunday.

Each ‘container home’ has four bedrooms, a kitchen, a washroom and a store. A team of Turkish experts has arrived for installing the shelters.The ambassador said the Turkish government would provide more shelters.

Rs2.35 billion collected for Balochistan quake victims
Individuals and public and private organisations entities have so far donated more than Rs2.35 billion in the Chief Minister’s Relief and Rehabilitation Fund for people affected by the recent earthquake in Balochistan.

Donors include the federal government, provincial governments, the Azad Jammu and Kashmir government, private companies, NGOs, philanthropists and the common man. Donations were also received from PIA, Wapda, PAF, Tethyan Copper Company, Qesco, MMC Duddar Mineral Development Corporation, Nepra and the Senate.

It is learnt that the federal government has released Rs2.08 billion for the quake-affected people. Former federal minister Raja Tridev Roy has donated Rs50,000.

Saudi Arabia pledges $100m earthquake aid

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud pledged US $100 million to Pakistan President’s Earthquake Relief Fund for the earthquake in Balochistan Friday.
Chinese Ambassador Luo Zahao Thursday presented President Asif Ali Zardari a cheque of $1m for the earthquake victims.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), pledged $1m assistance through international and non-governmental organizations to help meet the immediate needs of those affected by the earthquake.
Basic necessities such as tents, blankets, warm jackets, plastic mats and sleeping bags are needed, many already supplied to the affected region.
Over 200 people are believed to have died and around 3,000 have been displaced while over 300 houses have been destroyed.

Pakistan Quake Death Toll Reaches 230
Quetta, Pakistan (AHN) - The death toll from Wednesday's strong earthquake in Pakistan's Balochistan province reached 230 Thursday as rescuers continue to look for survivors buried under the rubble, according to local officials.
The deaths were from Ziarat district, including 114 from the village of Wam, a local official said, according to Dawn.com.
Medical workers are treating 400 injured villagers while relief workers, including the army and air force, distribute tents, blankets, sleeping bags, jackets, plastic sheets, medicines and rations to 47,000 Ziarat residents left homeless.
Survivors complained of the slow pace of assistance and lack of relief supplies as many victims remained unsheltered and exposed to freezing temperatures Thursday night.

PTCL donates Rs 10 million for quake victims
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Red Crescent Society in collaboration with International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) has started construction of 6000 Corrugated Galvanized Iron (CGI) shelters for the quake victims of Balochistan that will be completed by the end of December.

This was told during a meeting held here on Thursday at the PRCS National Headquarters that was presided over by the PRCS Chairman Saeed Ahmed Qureshi. The meeting was attended by PRCS Executive Committee members Mian Muhammad Javed, Maj Gen (Retd) Ch Muhammad Nawaz, Secretary General Muhammad Ilyas Khan, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Head of Pakistan Delegation Azmat Ullah, representatives of International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC), Turkish Red Crescent Society and other national sister societies.

Saeed Ahmed Qureshi told the meeting about his visit to the affected areas and the urgent need of the victims. He said that the PRCS will mobilize all its resources to fully support the victims in this hour of need and directed the officials to spare no effort in mitigating the sufferings of the victims. Briefing the participants of the meeting the PRCS Secretary General said that the decision was taken after assessment reports carried out by the PRCS and IFRC teams in the affected areas. He said that the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies of different countries are in touch with the PRCS and extending full support. He said that the Turkish Red Crescent Society is also constructing shelters in the most affected village Wam for the quake victims.

Ilyas Khan said that the PRCS Balochistan Branch has so far distributed shelter kits consisting of 11595 tents, 27000 blankets, 2000 CGI sheets, 6000 Traupline sheets, 5000 kitchen sets and 2500 stoves to the badly affected areas of Ziariat and Pashin. He said that the urgent need of the victims is blankets, sweaters and quilts and we are sending these items in a large quantity to the affected areas. He said that the PRCS health teams comprising doctors, paramedics and ambulances are fully operating in Ziariat. He said the PRCS Balochistan Branch is also moving all its resources to the affected areas to affectively help the victims of this disaster.

The PRCS National Headquarters in Islamabad is in touch with the PRCS Balochistan Branch to meet the requirements on emergency basis. IFRC Head of Delegation Azmat Ullah said that the IFRC will fully support the PRCS relief activities in the earthquake affected areas of Balochistan. He said that we are closely coordinating with the PRCS and in collaboration with other national societies we are fully adhere to the task. Representatives of ICRC and other national societies also assured full support to the PRCS in relief activities for the quake victims.

He has set up a rehabilitation fund for the purpose.“The international community, NGOs and philanthropists should come forward and provide maximum help for rehabilitation efforts,” he said at a press conference here on Thursday.
He said Punjab and the NWFP had offered Rs100 million and Sindh Rs70.
The chief minister said that Germany, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and other countries and European Union had offered help and cooperation.
He said the provincial government had released Rs7.5 million and members of his cabinet would donate their one month’s salary for the affected people.
Mr Raisani said that government departments would hold daily meetings to review the pace of relief work.
Home secretary Shaukat Awan told reporters that 66 injured people were airlifted on Thursday from different villages in Ziarat and admitted to hospitals.
He said that so far 155 deaths had been confirmed in Ziarat.
“Fifteen helicopters are taking part in the relief and rescue operation,” he said, adding that four C-130 planes carrying relief goods from Islamabad had arrived in Quetta while another four would land on Friday.
Mr Awan said that 3,793 tents, 6,015 blankets, 1,000 jackets and 1,150 plastic sheets had been sent to the affected areas, in addition to 1,200 tents and 1,500 blankets provided by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority.
He said the provincial food department had sent 5,400 bags of flour, sugar, rice and pulses and 10 cartons of tea to Ziarat and other affected areas.
He said that 18 medical teams and medicines worth Rs3.1 million had also been sent.
Mr Awan said the ICRC was distributing 5,000 food packets through the FC while Mercy Corps and PPHI had sent four medical teams.
He said the BRMP had provided ready-to-eat meats to about 1,800 people.
He said that coordination committees, headed by DCOs of Ziarat and Pishin districts, had been set up to ensure speedy distribution of relief goods.

UN to provide food to earthquake survivors in Pakistan
Islamabad - The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) said on Thursday it planned to provide food assistance to nearly 20,000 people left homeless by the deadly earthquake that struck Pakistan's north-western Balochistan province a day ago.
'We need to move fast, so we are going to start distributing food stocks from our warehouses in Quetta and Peshawar, so we can reach the people who need it most,' said WFP Pakistan Country Director Wolfgang Herbinger, in a statement.
He added that the organization would be coordinating its response with the government and other UN agencies.
The WFP plans to initially provide 700 tons of dry food rations to affected communities. The packages include wheat flour, pulses, cooking oil and salt for two months, according to the statement.
According to official figures, between 200 and 300 people lost their lives and more than 300 were injured in the earthquake that flattened several villages.

Aftershocks likely to continue in Pakistan's earthquake-hit areas
ISLAMABAD, Oct. 30 Aftershocks would likely to continue in quake-hit areas of Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province during next week with a gradual decrease in the magnitude, an official said on Thursday.

The Associated Press of Pakistan quoted Qamar-uz-Zaman Chaudhry, Director General of Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) as saying that 44 significant aftershocks were recorded in the affected areas during the day time on Wednesday, which were of 4 to 5 magnitude on Richter scale.

However, the magnitude of recent aftershocks was between 3 to 4,which he termed as a significant change.
He said cloudy weather would prevail in earthquake-affected areas including Ziarat, Pishin and Quetta during next 24 hours. However, there is no chance of rain.

Two major quakes hit Balochistan early Wednesday morning and the death toll in the deadly earthquake reached 200 on Thursday.

World leaders grieve over loss of lives in Balochistan quake
A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck southwest Pakistan before dawn on Wednesday, killing about 200 people and badly damaging eight villages.

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth, Prime Minister Gordon Brown, European Commissioner for External Relations Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit expressed sorrow over the tragic incident in their separate statements.

British High Commissioner Robert Brinkley passed on condolences from Queen Elizabeth, Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Foreign Secretary David Miliband to the families of all those people who lost their lives in the earthquake.
In Brussels, the European commissioner for external relations said in a statement: “I would like to express my heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathy with the people affected by this tragedy. The EU stands ready to assist Pakistan with humanitarian assistance if requested. “Afghan President Hamid Karzai has been shocked by the news of killing and injuring scores of people in the earthquake, and expresses his sympathy and condolences to the families of the quake victims and the people of Pakistan,” said a press release issued by the Afghan Presidency in Kabul.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also said in a message to his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani that New Delhi was ready to offer any help needed by Pakistan.

The Indian government stands ready to offer all possible assistance that you may require to provide relief to the people affected by this tragedy,” Singh said in his message.

The Turkish Red Crescent Society said in a separate statement that it was ready to send humanitarian assistance to Pakistan, adding two experts had already been sent to the quake-hit areas of Balochistan.

The Egyptian foreign minister in his message to Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said, “I wish to extend to your Excellency and to the families of the victims my sincerest condolences, praying that you and the people of Pakistan should be preserved from all the harm.”

Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation said it was sending medical aid and supplies enough for 50,000 people for three months to help victims of the earthquake in Pakistan.

The WHO said in a statement it is also flying trauma supplies stored at the UN Humanitarian Response Depot in Dubai to treat 400 people in the region. agencies.

The Prime Minister, who is currently visiting Turkey, spoke to Governor Balochistan over telephone and asked the provincial government to ensure provision of proper free medical care to the injured as well as relief goods like tents, blankets and food items.

He also assured that federal government would provide all necessary relief supplies to affected people.

The Prime Minister also asked the PPP rank and file in Balochistan, general public and philanthropists to take active part in relief activities and help local authorities in providing assistance to the injured and displaced people.
